PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) is a highly concentrated form of special components in the bloodstream. It carries essential proteins and growth factors (PRP is known to carry more than 20 growth factors!), which encourage healing, inspire collagen formation, and stimulate natural hair growth.
PRP has been used for quite some time in orthopedic medicine, cosmetic medicine and sports medicine; however it’s a relatively new game-changer on the scene as a natural and non-invasive method to treat hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia. The success of PRP hair restoration today is most specifically geared towards treating a particular type of hair loss and hair thinning, called androgenic alopecia.
Androgenic alopecia is an extremely common and inherited type of hair loss or hair thinning, which is more common in men but can also occur in women. The process is gradual, with men noting a recession of the frontal and temporal areas of the scalp, reshaping their hairline. For women, the hairline typically tends to remain intact, while hair is diffusely lost over the crown of the head or there is gradual thinning.
There are surgical procedures to treat this condition, such as hair transplants. Non-surgical options include topical products, hormone-blocking agents and most recently, PRP, which has quickly become a promising treatment option for patients with androgenic alopecia. Hair restoration using PRP has an excellent safety profile, and relatively low cost. It is something that can be used successfully for both men and women alike. An excellent alternative to more invasive procedures, hair restoration with PRP offers a completely natural solution to treat hair loss by using powerful cells generated by your very own body that provide natural-looking results.
How the Procedure Works:
Your doctor will draw a small amount of blood, and then separate the PRP from the red blood cells using a fast-spinning machine, called a centrifuge. Then, using a very thin needle, your own PRP (with all of those growth factors!) is injected into the scalp, specifically over the areas of balding or thinning hair. The growth factors in the PRP then stimulate hair growth and follicle restoration. The procedure is based in an outpatient setting, is brief, and very tolerable. A series of treatments is needed for the most optimal results, and treatments can be done once per month.
