Holiday Season – Be Kind to Yourself

This holiday season remember to be healthy and be kind.

With holiday party time rapidly approaching I want to remind all of you to be kind to yourselves.  Tis’ the season for delicious desserts and gourmet foods that are only seen during the holiday season.  While this is often an excuse to indulge please remember that indulgence may not always serve you.

The average American can gain as much as 5-8 lbs over the holidays.  This weight gain typically comes from over-eating and sweets.  Please be kind to yourself this holiday season and think about your long term wellbeing.    By all means enjoy but here are a few tricks to help yourself through the next few months:

1)      Think of your health as a bank account, each time you stuff yourself to bursting, or consume sugar you are pulling health out of the account.

2)      Eat your veggies first.  If you are full on fiber and antioxidants you will eat less of the high calorie and sugary foods.

3)      Take a moment to be truly thankful for the gift of nourishment with each bite.  Observe and give thanks for the bright colors and the nutrients in your food.  Take time to appreciate the rich flavors and the love and care put into the preparation of your meal.

4)      Think of your food as a long term gift to your body.  If what you are considering eating will only be tasty on your tongue but not revitalizing for your cells put it down, or only take a tiny bite…and make sure you savor it.

5)      Take your supplements!!!   This is a stressful time of year as well.  Think of taking your prescribed supplements as putting health in the bank.

6)      MAKE time to exercise.  This is another way to put health in the bank.

7)      Try to end the year with your account in the positive not the negative.  Don’t rely on New Year’s resolutions to dig you out of a hole.  Use New Year’s resolutions to make you BETTER than you were last year!

8)      YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!  If you have any doubts schedule a short accountability appointment with your doctor and we will be thrilled to give you more ideas.

Have a happy, healthy holiday season.
