Summer in Northern California is a prime time to get in shape. My philosophy is that exercise is a necessary part of any anti-aging program that will keep you active and vibrant. I prefer to focus more on strength and stamina than weight loss. I also think that to gain the full benefit of exercise it should be fun. For some people, the release of aggression that comes from boxing is fun. For other people the game of remodeling the temple of the human body with bodybuilding is exciting. I personally love yoga, ballroom dancing, spin, hiking and swimming. For those of us that like variety there are quite a few apps out there that encourage exercise. Here are some of my personal favorites:
- Asana Rebel: This is an app with yoga videos that you can follow. These short videos actually give variable settings based on your current level of fitness and your goals. I was actually sore the next day after these short workouts.
- Pokemon Go: If you are rolling your eyes right now just hear me out. For those of us from the crossover generation who remember what it was like to have to look things up in the encyclopedia and have been concerned about the direction of the digital generation this app gives me hope. I have seen more families out walking and interacting with their neighbors since this app came available than in prior years of smartphones. Pokemon go is a great way to entertain yourself while getting outside and walking. It is an excuse to hang out with your kids. Kids that would normally be inside hunched over a computer are outside moving and getting sunshine! And remember, your phone will buzz if there is a pokemon nearby so you don’t have to stare at your phone!!!
- Couch to 5K: this is a great app for people who can’t even imagine themselves running. This app gives a gentle introduction to getting the body moving, starting off alternating between walking and running small distances, and slowly building up until after 8 weeks, you’re ready to run 5 kilometers or 30 minutes non stop.
- Mindbody Connect: This app puts all of your gym schedules and local studios into the same accessible place. You can compare classes at the same times and choose what is best for you.
Remember that flexibility is just as important for defying the aging process as exercise. Supplementation should be guided by personal needs which can be identified by blood testing and evaluation by your naturopathic doctor. Family history, blood work, and a thorough evaluation can help you Naturopathic doctor create an anti-aging plan that is specific to you needs. For more information call 916-351-9355.
