To breathe or not to breathe

Even though Folsom and the surrounding areas did not rank among the top 100 worst places to live with asthma in 2015, it is still a real concern for sufferers and their loved ones.  From the seasonal dry conditions to brush fire smoke, regional triggers can worsen the impact on asthmatic lungs.   Contrary to popular belief, there is no cure for asthma. However, there are several natural and effective ways to lower the reactive threshold for hyperactive lungs.  This means that one does not have to live in fear, expecting frequent bouts of wheezing and coughing when you forget your inhaler in your gym bag or other purse at home.  One might ask, “What about attacks?”  In the most severe cases, conventional medicine takes precedence so an emergency visit is necessary.  However, in non-emergency situations conventional medicine has developed a formula of using both pharmaceuticals and allergy therapy to palliate patients.  The primary focus with medication is to relax and suppress the lungs with bronchodilators and/or steroids. In addition, doctors will send many asthmatics to allergists to find their environmental triggers and are subsequently suggested for either weekly injections or a lifetime on steroid nasal spray.  Yes, this will make things more manageable but it does not nourish the lungs enough that it can work effectively by itself.  Being primarily dependent on medication can consciously and unconsciously send a message to oneself of having a disability rather than a condition. There are naturopathic ways to not only relax the lungs but also nurture them with airway-specific protocols.  Successful weapons include therapeutic doses of herbs, vitamins, and minerals used in different ways.  Lifestyle habits and choices are also some of the most overlooked factors when taking care of asthma. Nutrition is a crucial aspect of lifestyle, and can have some of the strongest triggers.  With a combination of natural therapies and interventions, you will find that you can become more active, lessen your dependence on medication, and increase the quality of your life.
